Well....I did not expect the past two weeks to happen! So many crazy things all at once. Some good. Some bad. Am I learning more about myself? Absolutely. It is interesting that, when you are trying to change, the devil does his best to tear you back down. He utilized some of my own tools against me these past few weeks. If you know how to utilize the distractions to maximize efficiency, ADHD can be a super power, but sometimes even the super power can be utilized against you. The great thing about all of it is JESUS. He is my strength when I am weak. He is my focus when my sight lacks direction. He is my redeemer when I feel lost, and most of all He loves me through it all.
As alluded to above, there were two things that really struck me over the past two weeks that need to be addressed.
During the past few weeks we had lots of snow, which actually worked in my favor in a lot of ways.
Unfortunately, my ADHD has won over the past few weeks as well, and the newness of the endeavor has wore off.
I am not a real doomsday planner. I had already completed my grocery order for the week, and I most definitely did not want to brave the store with my kids. Neither did I want to send Warner into the store. We would end up with all kinds of foods that we enjoyed, but did not necessarily need. So, we opted to do with what we had which was plenty.
The snow predictions did not disappoint. We got over a foot of snow, and man was it beautiful when we awoke on Sunday morning. Warner streamed the pre-recorded service, and I was able to watch and drink my coffee from the comfort of my pajamas. I also usually work on Sundays, but due to the severity of the roads I was able to continue my lounging. It was a beautiful gift from the Lord.
If you know anything about me, you know that I cannot sit still well. Nor am I able to allow myself a fully lazy day, unless I am sick. So naturally, I decided that these few days were going to be spent decluttering the basement. A side note about our home, we do not have a garage. We have a rather large home with plenty of places for storage. Unfortunately when we moved in, we had about 6 months till we welcomed a new baby. Needless to say, we have just put things places and never really decluttered/made a home for it all. Also, when we bought the home it was still filled with items from the previous owners. I hitched up my big girl pajama pants and set to work.
Warner's tools have always kind of been a mess. They have also always been in the farthest depths of the basement. Pretty inconvenient when you needed to fix something. This was the first thing that was tackled. Now they are all organized in labeled totes. In one of our larger closets upstairs, with the batteries to the power tools plugged in and charged. Ready for use. It has been an amazing transformation already. It is so easy to just grab what we need, fix something, and most importantly, PUT IT RIGHT BACK WHERE IT BELONGS.
Now to be clear the picture above is not our room, but this is pretty close to what it looked like. Things piled on top of things. Some that we used and most that we did not. Lots of broken things that needed repaired. Or brand new things purchased to replace old, but never accomplished. Now this room took a bit longer than the tools, but when I was done, everything had a place. BONUS, we had room to spare, and now I also have an office/craft room in here. I keep getting booted out of my spaces, but with Warner's blessing I have a new one that I get to keep LOL!
We have a lot of technology left over from the past 20 years of marraige. Mostly cords or cables. We have lots of projectors, screens, musical instruments, tablets, phone cases, phone glass coverings, old phones, computer accessories, chargers, etc. We just had a lot of it, and it was all stored in three different places throughout the house. This makes no sense. So after a few hours of detangling cords, organizing them into labled totes, and putting it all back in one place, we are officially functional. If you ask me if we have a USB to USBC converter. I can walk right to the drawer/bin that it is in and grab it for you. This is quite the achievement for us!
I also hung out with my kids during this snow storm. We played some games, euchre, ate pizza, watched movies, and did other things to keep ourselves entertained. Always take advantage of time with kids, it goes so fast!
Now that I talked about the success, it is time to talk about the lack of it. I don't want to call it failure. It is too strong a word. It is more lack of planning and purpose.
This picture of my dog snuggled in my lap is a good summation of my bad habits. I tend to get tired or lazy. Lack of motivation is a real problem with those suffering from ADHD, and let me tell you that the Devil used it to the fullest extent.
I really enjoyed how productive I was on the house during the winter snow storm, but unfortunately all of that energy was channeled in one direction. I did not have time or space in my brain to focus on anything, but my current physical tasks. This may not seem like a bad thing, but once I start slacking off it is a slippery slope. I started just taking breaks to play a game with the kids or make a meal and then get back to deep cleaning. I conveniently "didnt have time" to plan meals or grocery shop online. I was "too tired" by the end of the day to cook so we ordered out. I was hyper focused on cleaning so I didn't prepare for the days ahead.
This is not necessarily a failure. It was just my hyperfocus and ability to rationalize that won the week. I was able to justify my lack of planning for food by my efforts in the house. It is a bad habit that I must work on relentlessly. I am glad that the Lord brought this to my attention.
The other bad habit that slipped back in was my ability to justify purchases for home improvement. We have a lot of updates and small projects going on in the house. We are renovating our bathroom, working toward getting a spiggot fixed outside that is leaking constantly. We are decluttering and need totes for all the things. It is easy to justify a home improvement purchase. The unfortunate part is that sometimes we don't use it right away. For example, I went out and purchased all the flooring, tile, faucets, etc supplies for the bathroom remodel in September. We did not start tiling until December. All of that money is just sitting there on the floor, and then we took some of it back because by the time we got to that part we didn't like the vibe.
I need to set a budgeted limit on how much we can spend a month on home improvement and stick to it unless there is an emergency. Justification is my downfall when it comes to budgeting.
